Diablo III, like any other popular MMORPG is typically dominated by the presence of virtual 'gold', a currency mimicking that of the real world. Gold allows players to buy new items to upgrade your character's current abliity's and armour. As per other popular online games, such as Blizzard's World of Warcraft, the majority of the game revolves around the use of gold for buying and selling in game items. Without gold, character's would be unable to advance within the game with great ease, as the ingame currency allows the option of upgrading your gear, providing an advantage over your foes of the same level.
There are typically numerous ways of obtaining gold in game including; completing quests, killing NPC's and selling items already obtained. Many people also decide take part in an action referred to as 'gold farming' which typically involves a long period of activity, during which the players sole objective is to receive and generate as much in game gold as possible. Many company's pay employee's to generate amounts of gold for resale through their website as well. These company's typically also offer other services such as 'power levelling' (paying for somebody to level your character up a number of levels, in a short duration of time).
The auction house encorporating both gold and real world money, has also been featured within Diablo III and allows players to purchase (and sell) items within the Auction house for real world money and reward. The maximum price on the auction house is currently $250. This new feature allows players to potentially make money by playing (and selling the rewards of) the game. This has been an unexpected feature in Diablo III as previously Blizzard have been strongly opposed (as largely demonstrated within the World of Warcraft community) to the sale of in game goods and services for real world currency.
